Hump Day: Ensaimada Mallorquina, Typical Pastry of Majorca, Balearic Islands Spain

Ensaimadas are spiral pastries from the island of Mallorca (Majorca) made from milk, eggs, sugar, flour, lard (although other recipes call for vegetable shortening) and yeast. They require a period of time to rise, as with most breads, and after the oven are sprinkled with a generous all-over-your-hands-shirt-and-mouth powdered sugar. They are a must try if you find yourself in the Balearic Islands or even the Eastern Spanish coastal cities like Barcelona, Valencia or Alicante - traditionally where Mallorquin speaking immigrants may have settled.
